Default 2006 XC90 Transmission Slipping

Hello Everyone,

TIA

My 06 XC90 just began slipping, Reverse seems to be fine. I took it out this morning and as I was driving I heard a clunk and then the trany began to slip. I have a few questions I hope someone can answer.

Specs:
06 XC90
141K miles
2.5T
5 Speed Auto/Man trany

1) Did'nt find a dip stick on this model? Is there one?
2) How do you check the fluid level without a dipstick?
3) Can I change the fluid myself (I have mechanical experience) If so then can you explain the procedure as my online manual doesn't have one.
4) What would you recommend changing while the pan is down?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

JR

there is no dipstick as it is a sealed transmission..and unfortunately you are going to need a transmission replacement. if you were to drop the transmission oil pan..i am almost willing to bet you will have a ton of metal shavings in there.

There is a dipstick. Its under where the lower radiator hose goes over the trans.

You can change the fluid but don't need to take the pan off (its a side cover actually).

I would suggest seeing if the TCM software is up to date as well.

sigh..those transmissions have a high failure rate. yeah..you can change the fluid and even do a transmission flush for a couple hundred bucks..which might last 2-4 months before the transmission fails all together. i can't tell you how many of these we have replaced.

So you've replaced a bunch but never knew there was a dipstick? Hmm..

The AW transmissions aren't nearly as bad as the GM ones.

his has the t5 engine so it does have the GM trans. Ok...i am the parts guy at my Volvo dealership..so i personally have not looked at the transmission assemblies. The techs do all the work..i sell the parts. and after being there for several years i kinda picked up on few "problems". so..pardon me for knowing there was a dipstick per se.

Oh okay that explains it. I thought you were a tech. The T5 does not have the GM trans. And the 2.5T is not the same as the T5.

No issues unless you keep guessing at things you don't actually know.
