Default 4.6 Ford powered Volvo s80? Ideas for possible heart transplant.

Call me crazy, but I actually had a crazy idea come to mind:

I've got a totaled 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis in my backyard with a Ford 4.6L engine and an AODE transmission, and an 8.8 ford rear end to boot. It's been sitting there, but I decided not to have it crushed because I figured one day I might find a car to donate its driveline into. So for the last year I've kept it.

I'm possibly thinking of taking some fabrication classes over the summer and doing a hardcore engine transplant. I also havebuddies of mine who run fab shops also.Converting it over to rear wheel drive and very kindly sticking a supercharger up top. Crap, I love my volvo for the luxury car aspect but I'm not all that big a fan of the inline 6 it has. I think it'd be wicked to have a V8-powered Volvo s80 hehe. That would wake it up nicely.

And I actually picked up a backup beater car for next to nothing for a backup car. Who knows, I might do it.

Outrageously difficult? Without a doubt. Thousands of man hours. Easily.Awesome? Definately. With some mild upgrades on a ford modular engine I could get even a 4,000 pound luxury to go like a bat out of hell.

The big issue would be making sure there's enough room in the engine bay and the firewall isn't an issue. I know it's probably a stupid idea, but I happened to have my volvo parked in the driveway, and then I glanced over to the wrecked mess of my former car rotting the backyard. Then somehow I put the 2 ideas together.

Am I losing my mind? I've seen LS1-powered toyota mr2's and all sorts of other oddball engine transplants.

I think the big thing for me is honestly, I like the s80 because I like the bodystyle. I like the luxury it offers. Hate its anemic powerplant.

P.S. If anyone thinks I'm an idiot, look at this:

I guess I'm not the only guy with that idea.

Your not an idiot no. A lot of people have done transplanted engines. It can be done.

If you want to try it do it. I know it is going to be one big migrane though.

I'm going to look into it. Also going to talk to a friend of mine, he does crazy engine swaps like this for a living. He's the one that put a corvette LS1 into a 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder. I think it'd be one awesome combo in my opinion.

The 4.6 is pretty anemic stock (235 hpstock), but with some bolt ons and some stuff here and there they can pretty easily get 400 hp out of them or more.

Look back into this on and off, you might not hear from me much on here butI'll try to update everyone on what's going on.

There's only one big issue I noticed today:

Unrelated wise, I was just filling up the washer fluid resivoir under the hood. Going back to getting a general idea of what kind of room I'd have for the 4.6, I am a little concerned. Even though on the outside of the car the long hood seems to give away the idea of a decent-sized engine bay, the room underneath is tight. I am not all that confident now that the ford v8 will fit without some serious massaging to the firewall.

I'm still going to do it when funds allow, but I do worry about the clearance I'll have to play with.

Forget room for the engine, bigger issue is stripping the car down to the floor pan and welding in a tunnel big enough to house the transmission and drive shaft, probaly going to have to do some surgery for the rear end also. Two better options IMO, is to find a RWD volvo and drop the V8 in there. or if you want to get creative, find a Ford DOHC V8 SHO( Yamaha) from a front wheel drive Taurus, add twin turbos and then slip it into the S80. this is basically the same 4.4 V8 as in the XC90 and the same one coming to the S80 and V70 in 2008

All the problems you are having with your NA and then the FORD engine implant. You could seriously buy a 1995-1997 850 turbo model of some kind, 1998 s70 turbo model of some kind and or a c70 LPT or HPT.

Really no headaches with mods for these.

I like ur crazy idea of putting a mustang engine to your S80 i have to repair my S80 engine wich it will cost me a lot of money. But I was wondering its going to take a lot to put a mustang engine to the volvo the mustang is rear wheel drive and the s80 is front wheel drive. Is there a so much easier and cheapier option to put like taurus V8 or another 6 cylinder engine that is much cheapier I don't want to repair mine engine i'm thinkin of buying and another engine to my S80 But what should I look for?????????????????

Actually, it got me thinking:

but since I have a 99 S80, if I remember correctly the transmission is a GM unit. So doesn't that mean something like a GM Ecotec 4 cylinder or a grand prix supercharged v6 could be mated up to it?

Just another idea.

Yeah Its true I think a Super charger grand Prix Engine will look good on the S80 But how about the electronical and all the wiring what will happen if I put a diferent enigne on the car will the computer go crazy or something like that I was thinkin of that and a lot of everything else like O2 sensors and oter electronically parts we need some serious help here LOL If I can put a diferent engine on my s80 I will be very happy about it i like the idea of the 4.4 v8 taurus engine it might fit perfectly and the grand prix as you said to... Well keep in touch

Umm, a grand prix 3800 series v6 comes with a roots-style supercharger on it from the factory.

Pic of a stock one:

Also, this got me thinking while we're on the subject:

What would it take to convert one of these from auto to manual?

Is it just a matter of finding another GM FWD manual tranny or is there more to it than that? Also, would the positioning of the shifter change? Modifications to add a clutch pedal...etc.

Like auto for around town but I personally like shifting gears myself. Unless I do a hardcore engine swap or a serious turbo setup would I consider doing this however.
