'82 240 Wagon, 250k - 1400: Is This a Good Deal?
Hi,
i've never owned a volvo before. I'm looking to buy someone's '82 240 with 250k, good interior and roof rack for 1400.
Would anyone be able to tell me the reliability of an old volvo like this with 250k+ miles on it?
I'm happy to buy something that needs some TLC, but not interested in a lemon.
thanks for you help!

Likely a very good deal. I would have any older car checked out, especially if I don't have history with the car or the model.
I had one of those red blocks and put over 400,000 on it with very little cost, $174 per year. It wasn't 30 years old, but it was a great car. I believe those are 1,000,000 mile motors if you keep the oil changed and breather system serviced.
From what I have read and been told, those things sell for about $3,500 when in good / fair condition.

Depends on how much work it will need. I was just in the market for a 240 wagon (bought one) and found that there are some areas to look at. I avoided the older ones due to bio-degradable wiring harnesses. Not sure what years the bio ones are, but I got a 1990 because I knew that the 90's were a better year and many of the bugs were worked out of the later models.
My project car was 800 dollars and was in need of a LOT of work a lemon perhaps.....Naaaaa ...What makes a car a lemon? because in needs more then one thing fixed? A lemon is only a lemon untill I squeeze it, then its lemonade.
I did some research ahead of time to find out the cost of completely rebuilding this car and assumed that the project car that I would be buying will need EVERYTHING. haha I was right!!!
So far I have replaced everything the rear end has to offer, from brakes to shocks, every bushing and every nut and bolt. then moved on to the front end and did the same thing.
Let me tell you the cost is not that bad I am looking at about 3k all said and done and will have pretty much a brand new ride when I am finished. So I guess it all depends on what its worth to you. BTW you can get away cheaper then 3k if you don't stray to much from oem, but those ipd parts were just calling my name....
