hi.
i have an 87 volvo 740 turbo.

for the past three months, it has been giving me issues when coming out of idle.
the problem occurs after warmed up, and after sitting at 5 or so stop lights.
when i give it gas after sitting in idle for a while, it is as if there is no response for a second or two, the car kind of cuts out (and it gradually gets worse as i drive more).
once it begins doing this, it starts to stall out when sitting in idle for half a minute or so. (it will sputter, and when i give it gas it either A) kicks back in or B) there is absolutely no response and it sputters and dies) the longer i drive it for, the worse it gets, and eventually it dies and doesnt start.

i had the external fuel pump changed about a year ago, and it has always whined (sometimes louder than the engine itself).
when the car begins to sputter the fuel pump will whine louder.
also, when sitting in idle the gas gauge will read less, up to half a tank.
after i give it gas (and if it doesnt stall), it will cut out and then start going and the gauge will go back to normal.


its been doing this for about three months, gradually getting worse and worse.
now it doesnt last more than five minutes



ive replaced the fuel filter, temp sensor, and main fuel pump (and it still whines).
today im going to look at the in tank pump, but seeing as im pretty mechanically incompetent i dont know what to look for.
unfortunately im a poor college student so this stuff hurts >.<

When was the last tune up?
Which temp sensor was replaced?
There is an in-tank fuel pump also check that.

 

it was located on the side of the engine block underneath the throttle body. sort of.
there is another one elsewhere?


the plugs/wires were replaced about three months ago, the distributer and coil were both replaced about a year ago.
does that qualify as a tuneup? like i said, im mechanically incompetent. (the haynes manual is almost latin.)



the car sat around in my moms garage for 11 years. it started no problem.
but i had to have the fuel injectors replaced w/in a week.
the local volvo mechanic thinks my gas tank is rusting from the inside out. i cant afford to replace that unfortunately.


my grandpa thinks its the fuel regulator? today i paid attention to the external fuel pump, and i noticed three things while playing with it.

when i first start the car, it does not whine at all. it takes a few minutes.
when i hold it, it still whines. so its not a vibration.
the whines pitch gets higher when the car is about to die.

it only takes it about five minutes.


and ideas?

 

When was the last time you checked the Fuel Filter...?

 

I would probably do a tune up real soon...

Is your check engine light on? To check the codes...you need to find this box.

Yep. also check the relays.
those links should have everything in there to help you check stuff.

 

im really sad to say it, but i broke it.

the sending unit for the intank fuel pump. the car sat for a pretty long time and everything is rusting out.
the breather hose snapped off.
im a poor college student. i cant afford it all the repairs and expensive parts... so im storing it for now >.<
