Question 95 Volvo 960 Speed Sensor

Hello, new here. Looking to get some help determining which speed sensor I need for my 95 Volvo 960. I was driving a couple weeks ago and while accelerating the RPMs went kinda high and sounded like the transmission wouldn't catch gear (trans slipping?), then suddenly it caught. Ever since that day my Speedometer and Odometer do not work, furthermore the transmission seems confused on what gear to be in and sometimes seems slower than necessary.

I have no issue starting the vehicle. The ABS light isn't on, the brakes work fine (worn and shakey, but that's a brake issue I'll be fixing). The RPMs read on the cluster. JUST the Speedo and Odometer are out of function.

My main questions are: A) Which Speed Sensor needs replaced? The rear diff or the transmission? B) I can't quite find a part that fits for the front Sensor. They all say for C70, S70, or V70 and I'm wondering if these will fit a 95 960.

I'd rather do the work myself for the experience and to save some money so any advice and help would be appreciated.

Does that car have a sensor in the differential? If so that would be the one that the speedo uses. Don't have access to VIDA today, if I did I could give a definitive answer.

The csv70 cars are front wheel drive - that will not be the correct part.

I believe it does have a sensor in the rear diff. So that's the sensor that will need replaced then? That's also what I seen online a few times, but wanted to be certain I was getting the right part.

Can't tell you that - I would diagnose the problem rather than throw expensive parts at a car. That sensor works the abs also - so if there's not a problem with the abs you may be guessing in the wrong place.

Any codes in any control unit? Exactly what are the symptoms? Those transmissions have some funny failures and I had a hard time finding one the last time I needed one (5 years ago)

By the way - I've never sold or replaced, or have seen a bad wheel speed sensor of that style in the differential. That part number 1398321 fits just about every rear wheel drive Volvo from 1988-1998.

The ABS seems fine, brakes don't lock up and there isn't a "ABS" light up on the dashboard. The symptoms are, from what I can tell, just a rough idle when it starts and the fact that sometimes it doesn't know what gear to be in, seems slow at times. I know the car isn't some quick sports car, but it does feel off compared to when the Speedometer worked.

I'll have to get around and check the OBD at some point, but admittedly the morse code style is frustrating at times. Thank you for the help, I do appreciate the feedback
