AC belt
Hello, it's been a while since I've logged on. My Volvo S80 2009 AC was working great but was making a noise and on Friday it just stopped cooling. I now still hear a rattling noise. My question is does the ac run on the same belt that runs everything else or does it have it's own belt for this year Volvo? I was told by someone who just took a quick look at it that it has it's own belt and I'm not in danger of messing anything else up if I drive it for the next week. But I really don't want to cause problem that can be avoided. By maybe paying someone to carry me to work. Hope this makes sense.
What engine do you have? If it's the 6 cyl that belt drives the water pump also (and power steering on some cars). The rattling noise could be from the ac clutch - Possibly the bearing has gone bad - or on the 6 cyl ac clutch there is a - I'll call it a noise reduction damper - that wears and gets jammed between the two clutch parts. If so you can either remove the ring, or replace the clutch. Either requires unbolting the compressor to get enough room to get the clutch off. A new clutch lists for about $350 and takes an hour or so to replace. (with the right tools)
