the bent valve thing

the bent valve thing
Hi, everybody-have a 2012 S60 with 96,000 miles and in great shape. Lost power and warning lights exploded-towed to dealer and informed that the tensioner failed resulting in the serpentine and timing belt failure. So now, welcome to the interference engine. Volvo dealer says, of course, valves bent and who knows what else? Dealer says ~$9,300 to fix engine. Car only worth, what, 5K?
So, I wrote to Volvo-after a little back and forth, they've offered me $1,200 toward repairs, at the dealer, of course. Not going to put in $7,100 either.
What do you folks think is the best option:
1. take to local Volvo specialist and pay $4-5K maybe repair and sell
2. find a used head assembly
3. find a rebuilt head assembly
4. see how much the car is worth to a repair/wholesaler outfit?
5. OTHER?

Get a quote from a local Volvo specialist - when I used to do those the total bill was usually about $2500 (3 years ago in GA). That included having the head repaired at a reputable machine shop. Why would you want to sell after repairing the head?

thanks
yes, good advice and good question. this is my 7th Volvo, going back to my wonderful '62 122 B-18 so it's a given that I love the brand........I thought I'd drive this baby for the rest of my life, but, alas. I thought I could put in a navi and back up camera but two dealers have told me I can't integrate it with the existing screen, so was thinking about a newer ride with those accessories.....but you're right-after investing a good chunk, why not drive it and suck up the lack of two accessories. Thanks, I'll have it towed from the dealer to a very reputable Volvo repair shop in CT and ask him for the estimate and all appropriate options.

I'm old school and still use a stand alone garmin in all my cars - even though all three have built in NAV. The garmins have traffic and the maps can be updated free for life. I Use a Pro-clip or pro fit mount (no suction cups) and add an additional hidden 12v outlet - I have a 2015 xc70 with a center stack similar to your s60 - the area behind it holds the new 12v outlet and the wires hide nicely.
