Default buying and need some help

I'm looking to buy a used volvo....
theres one for 750.00 '84 with 85,000 miles thats been sitting for 10 years
(but the seller hasn't been returning my calls)
another for 900.00 '86DL 289,000 original miles with a new engine of 35,000 miles......

I guess I'm wondering how long can a car sit before there are serious problems
and should I be worried about the transmission in the second car?
How expensive is a tranmission to replace?

I need a car bad but don't want to be stranded on the side of the road....
I need something quick!

Default RE: buying and need some help

i had a nissan sentra, with a bad timing chain. the car sat for about 8 to 10 months, i started to drive it once a week or so, couple days ago the timing chain fixed itself, i dont know how but it did. other than water spots, i havent seen any oil leaks the engine runs fine. it all depends on the car and the area it was in. 8 months does not compare to 10 years, why dont you go to a auction,

Well on any of them I would take them to a MECH to have them look it over and tell you the problem areas with the cars.

Also why not look into a newer model like in the 1990's-1998 range?
