Check engine light shut off

Check engine light came on, so made an appt at a mechanic shop to get a diagnosis.
Thought it was low power steering fluid, replaced it. Thought it was old, dark motor oil, changed that. Nope.
The manual specifies changing oil every 5k, and Volvo experts say 3k. I let this go for 11k! (But maintained a good level.) My previous longest was 8k.
My own diagnostic box is worthless, thinks the car is fine.
I have to wonder if anyone, anywhere gets useful data out of those worthless things.
Two days before shop appt the check engine light went out. Cancelled the appt, reasoning that without fault codes, the shop would not be able to determine what the problem was.
Was I right, or do fault codes get saved?
