Diesel Volvo??
What years was the diesel engine available in the Volvo for United States customers? Also who made that engine for Volvo? I remember renting one in the late '70s but I remember it was sooooo slow! Thanks
My in-laws had an 83 760 Turbo Diesel and my first Volvo was an 85 760 Turbo Diesel. Then engine was made by VW. Ran great, got great mileage, but blew black smoke like crazy. I personally would never buy another one, but I loved the car when I had it and so did my wife and my mother in-law. My 85 was pretty fast too once you got it rolling.
Hi. I'm about to pick up an '84 760 TD. Looking for an active forum to discuss whatever problems I have, and to maybe to provide some help as knowledge permits.
Any experience with this vehicle, or comments about it would be appreciated.

I know they have the new 2007 S80 d5 diesel in europe. I dont understand why Volvo is not bringing it to the US. I knowMerceadese Benz and VW are quite succesfull in there diesel cars here in the US and I dont see why Volvo can not be especially with the riseing gas prices here.
That 84 760 TD does it have the 3 speed or 4 speed automatic? My in laws 83 had 3 speeds and my 85 had four speeds. The 85 was a much more responsive car. I bet you have trouble finding somebody to work on it. I sold mine when I moved to Colorado because it would not run worth a damn in the high altitude. When I lived in the DC area it ran fine, and would get around 35-40 mpg if I remember correctly. Personally I would not buy another one though. The car stunk, and I mean that literally. It ran great, drove great and handled great, but it smelled like diesel fuel all the time, and you would get the fumes inside the car when it got older.
Diesel engines are having trouble meeting the new emission standards in the U.S. (California). That is the major reason why the european autos are not being sent to the U.S.. It seems that America wants E-85 fuel.

My '84 is a 4 speed. It came with '84 and '85 owners manuals, as apparently Volvo makes changes during the year. Runs great so far. After reading all the things one has to do to keep it running well, I probably made a mistake. Then again, I'll do the things I can do to keep it running well.
To start with:
1. Change all the belts, and the belt tensioner.
2. Waterpump
3. Switch to Rotella T synthetic, 1 quart Lucas Oil Stabilizer
4. Have a compression check as a benchmark.
5. Find a mechanic I can trust... lots of luck on that one.
6. Change out coolant, test coolant, and keep a careful watch on that.
7. Cross fingers and don't sell my Toyotas
