Default Engine Temp Sensors

I replaced on in my car because it went bad and gave an intermittent signal. Now I'm trying to solve a hunting idle issue and my manual say that the temp sensor may be a problem. So here is my question: what makes a temp sensor go bad? If something made it go bad then maybe it could make all the sensors (my car has 3) go bad eventually. What is an average lifespan of one of those sensors?
