Default Engine Undershield

Got a question for you all. It is about my 2002 V70 T5 but should be applicable to most newer Volvos

Mine came to me missing the plastic engine undershield that bolts to the opening (approx 30" x 30") in the main front subframe. It has the front undershield under the radiator and condenser.

How important is the engine undershield? A lot of my driving with this car is work related, I.E. long 75mph freeway trips. Will an undershield make any significant difference in my gas mileage.

I don't run the undershield on my diesel Benz and have had no problems with damage from road debris, etc. The Volvo is replacing the Benz and will travel up to 20,000 miles per year for work. A noticable increase in gas mileage will easily justify the cost of the replacement shield and the extra aggravation of having to drop it to access the underside of the engine.

I await your answers and expertise.

Undershield will not improve gas milage. May help avoid road debre damage.
