Default ETM life

Hello

I just want to know if the life of the ETM only depends on the millage or does the age af the car play a role also. And whats the expected life of the ETM I had to replace it on my 99 S80 at 80K miles.

Since Volvo ran the warranty on the ETM out to 10 years/200,000 miles I assume it is some of both. When I went to the site that was discussing this issue most of the ETM's were failing at about 75-80 K as I recall. It also depends on what they replaced the unit with. If it was one of the crappy units that came in the car, expect a similar failure rate. If one of the new design, I have no idea, BJ

If they are cleaned every 20,000 miles they will last till 100,000 miles or longer.

It is anyones guess on exactly how long it will last.

Tech do you know an easy way to clean the ECM or is it something so sensitive that a Volvo tech needs to do. My XC70 is five years old but only has 25K on the clock and ECM has never been touched. Is it something I can do with a cleaner like throttle body cleaner or? Thanks. BJ

It can be done by you but it is a pain to get to. It will need to be removed to clean it.

Thanks, Tech. My wifes 2001 XC only has 25K on it and so far no trouble from the module. I have seen a pic of it but did not know how to access the part that needs cleaning. I assume dealer can and he would charge me ? to do the work? Thanks again. BJ

Yes they will charge you to clean it. It screws into the intake from underneath. You would have to remove the big plastic pipe to gain access to the screws to remove it.
