Help! Need timing belt shop recommendation in Rhode Island, plus a few questions....
Hi everybody!
I have a 2004 Volvo S80 (turbo), with just about 80,000 miles on it and I really need some help and advice.
I got it in January of 2020 and have put just about $4,000 into it, not including oil changes, which I do not need that often, since the oil stays much cleaner longer than any other car I have ever had. The biggest job was getting a transmission replacement in March of 2022.
My car runs great, but I'm overdue for a timing belt since the last mechanic who saw it said he can see how old it is and I know this is critical.
I've contacted two reputable local shops and both gave me the same odd response: booked out a month, and even when I offered to wait, they seemed to not want the job.
One mentioned "you've got an older car" without explaining why that mattered.
Neither shop would say directly that they couldn't do it. I'm wondering if they do not want the liability of working on an older car??? ... or if general shops just don't want to deal with Volvo specifically?
1) Does anyone know a trustworthy shop in Rhode Island that works confidently on older Volvos?
2) If the timing belt were to snap suddenly while driving, is there any danger to me or other drivers, beyond the engine damage itself? Would I lose steering, braking, or control? I want to understand the actual risk level while I'm still driving it and looking for a shop.
On top of all this, I've had an evap code for quite some time and a check engine light that I'm trying to get sorted. It may be a purge valve issue, according to a scan that O'Reilly's did for me, but I haven't found the right person to diagnose it yet. The car drives great otherwise.
3) If it is the purge valve, could any damage be caused to the car by continuing to drive it?
4) How many other possibilities are there for code PO497 ??
Any shop recommendations in Rhode Island, or advice on these issues, would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
