How are volvo's generally regarded?

I think you will find Volvos at both ends of the spectrum. Some cars are taken care of better than others and it shows. Some look well-preserved for their age and others are one step away from getting crushed. Just like any other nameplate, some years are better than others.
Personally, I get complements all the time on my car. I think most people see a late-model Volvo and they have it in their head that it costs more than it does - which is cool. Most people are also under the assumption that they are hard to fix, or expensive to own. I don't think either are true, but that is my opinion.
All in all, if you own a poorly maintained vehicle (regardless of marque) you will get a different response than if you own a well maintained one. Volvos specifically have a reputation for being a safe, long-lasting luxury vehicle.
