Default 1994 850 Turbo Usage?

I just got a sweet 1994 White Turbo 850 wagon. How often do you guys use the turbo on purpose ? I'm a chicken **** and baby this ride. Any turbo usage advice? I'm new to the Turbo and want to know the do's and donts. Thanks , Marvin.

Hey Marvin, the turbo turns all the time since it's in the exhaust line.

The big thing to know and understand is that you should NOT boost it until the car warms up. Then you should NOT turn the car off right after you boost, it needs to cool off a minute or two or it will cook the oil in it. Other than that you can keep your foot in it from a to b, as long as you can afford the tickets.

You just don't want to cause wear and abuse by not letting it warm up and cool off properly. I probably get in mine at least once per day to get out of someone's way. I look at it's speed as a safety feature.

Thanks for the input . So let me make sure I understand boost. Boost is when I'm in the White part of my Guage right? This is where I should make sure to let warm up and cool down when I'm in this zone correct? Thanks Marvin.

I usually drive my wife's sedan moderately, since really pushing it results in spinning one wheel. There's an on-ramp I take on the way to work daily. That's my favorite part of the commute, winding it out in third and enjoying the boost. Like rspi said, allow time for the car to warm up and cool down, to prolong the life of the turbo. I still have a few miles left on the drive after merging with traffic on the freeway.

Thumbs up

Cool thanks for the input. I know an onramp that I will try. So are you shifting / automatic into 3rd and boosting the turbo getting on the freeway? Sound good to me.

Marvin, my wagon is a manual-swap. Heading towards the on-ramp, I'll coast down a long hill in 5th. I'll downshift to 3rd to help slow from the 50 to 35mph limit. Once I make it around the bend, onto the on-ramp, that's when the fun starts. Anything over 3500 rpm turns my day right around! If you like a manual, and are on the fence about swapping your car, DO IT! I like my wife's almost identical car, but love driving my wagon.
