ignition wont turn
My ignition key will not turn sometimes. Steering wheel is NOT locked. Just the ignition key won't turn. Without any outside effort it will just as randomly start working again. It used to do this for 5-15 min. Now it lasts longer and then returns to normal operation. 1999 volvo s70 160k. Any thoughts on this? anyone having this problem? know what could be the cause? expensive fix?
Does it matter where the shifter is? Does moving the shifter make a difference? You may have a problem with your shift lock cable. It's at the base of the shifter. You'll have to pull the center console to get at it. Likely looks like this one from my 960.

Sounds to me like the ignition lock cylinder itself is bad. I've had problems with the ignition lock cylinders on my '83 242 Turbo, my '84 242 DL, and now my 2000 V70XC. It's easy to remove; disconnect battery, using correct size TORX driver, (cheap sets at Harbor Freight), remove lower steering column cover, pivot upper cover up and out of the way, remove 2 screws holding R/H switch assy and pivot out of the way, insertkey and turn to 1 position, insert app. 2mm rod into hole on back side of lock cylinder facing inst. cluster, ( a finishing nail of the right size will do), remove lock cylinder.
NOTE; if you call the VOLVO dealer, they will try to sell you the entire switch assy for $300+. Get one from a junkyard if you can find a car with the keys. You'll have to carry an extra key, but so what.
