Default 98 v70 key wont turn in ignition

Hi. So I get in my car to go get dinner and the key wont turn in the ignition. I can only turn it to I. I dont understand why this would happen because I had driven the car less then 5 hours before this happened. Could anyone help me understand why this would happen and tell me what should be done to fix it?

They go bad. My V70R ignition works with the key partially inserted. When I bought the car, it was fully inserted and stuck. It took lots of forceful wiggling to get it out.

How much to pay a car thief to convert the lock from key to screwdriver operated? Then simply lock the car as you always would and don't tell anyone. I bypassed the electrical part of the ignition switch on my old Audi with 2 toggles and a push button (to start). As long as you remembered to use the key to unlock the steering wheel, it was all good!

You can probably fix it if it's like the 850. There is a spring in the back of the cylinder and a small pin that holds the cylinder in the hole. What I suspect happens is the pin gets worn or jarred and the cylinder pops part way out. I got mine to pop out then reasembled and put it back in, so far it's worked fine (50k miles). I think if I had just given it a good whack to begin with it would have gone back together (try at your own risk). But what really do you have to loose, you can't break it if it's already broken. A new lock will be pricy as they have to order (and probably make) the one for your car, or your door key won't match your ignition key.
