Smile Looking for a Used Volvo to Buy, What are some of the best years and models to get?

So I currently have a 1995 850 Volvo that runs great, but it barely past smog last summer, and I don't think it will pass the next upcoming summer. I want to start researching what models and years are best to get.

I'm looking for something reliable and I can only afford a used car. Something in the early 2000s range.

I've seen a lot of S40 and S60 for sale. But are these models not very reliable is that why there are so many for sale?

Any suggestions on a good reliable model and years for volvos?

The problem with your question is twofold.
First, what is wrong with the 850? It may well be nearing the end of it's life but then again, if the rings and valves/guide are good (as many are in older volvos) a through "Stage One" tune and a few tanks of fuel w/RXP would be my first plan of attack. If that didn't do it I would find someone to do a Fuel/Induction Service using the BG branded system. This would have the advantage of getting your car that "runs great" on the road for a few more years for 500 bucks or so. It's resale value is quite low but you won't buy a better vehicle for that and a good tune.

Second, if the car is toast I'd recommend an S40. 60's may well have been driven harder over the 15+ years since new. An ADULT driven S40 is likely to be driven more carefully. But you have to check and then cross your fingers.

Any early 2000 car will need work, just like your 850. Sometimes it's better to stay with what you know than buy someone else's problems.

Get a '96 or '97 850 and fix it up; best car volvo ever built IMO.

Any volvo from the '99 to early 2000s will be a downgrade and money pit. Get 2006 or later if you can afford it.

To be more specific, how about a 2002 S60? I came across one locally and the seller seems eager

144,000 miles
Engine oil leak
Check eng light on

I'm making plans to go look at and drive the car. I'm not concerned about suspension, steering, brake related stuff because in my mind they will need attention before even looking at the car. I can repair those myself, I'm knowledgeable and skilled with vehicle repair

Not being familiar Volvo's, my concern is issues that are Volvo specific. Engine lifters, tensioners, camshaft, door lock mechanism, faulty lighting circuit, transmission, etc. Volvo specific defects that usually don't show their ugly face until after ownership

He's asking $900
