Default Low speed shudder when turning

Hi. New member here. I've got a 2000 V70 with 65k miles that has a shudder in the front left wheel when turning, especially right turns at low speeds. Also has some front end knocking when going over bumps. One mechanic says it needs a new rack & pinion assembly, $850 installed. Took it to another shop, they say new struts, sway bar, and tie rods ($800 installed). Plus, may need new steering pump ($500 installed), which could be cause of shudder. But they suggested draining steering fluid and trying that first, before replacing pump. Not sure what to do! Any thoughts? Thanks.

All shops seem to be trying to rip you off.

If one wheel is shuddering, I doubt if the PWS pump or the R&P unit is causing the trouble.

I would check for the tyre & wheel for out-of-round first. Then check to see if the balance weight has been thrown off (though this one should be noticed even when going straight). Or, something is loose at the left-front suspension. I would visually check for loose component. Wait for other members' replies as well to get better perspective.

As to the front-end knocking, most likely it is from the notorious upper spring seats. Unless you notice unattenuated bouncing at the front, the struts are fine. See attached; the IPC is for the 850 but I believe the V70 uses similar set-up.

Thanks JPN. I ended up having struts, tie rod and sway bar replaced. I needed a state inspection which I couldn't get without new tie rod and sway bar. The front end is definitely tighter and no more knocking. But I've still got the shudder in the front left wheel...and now it seems like the right wheel, too. If the shudder is on both sides is it likely to be the rack & pinion (1st mechanic's opinion) or the power steering pump (2nd mechanic's opinion)? Finally, can I buy these parts rebuilt instead of paying full price for new from the dealer? Thanks.

The pump seems hefty at over $400. You could try junk yard or local auto parts shop but wait until you receive more replies from other members, especially from Tech. I am unable to isolate the problem without testing the car myself.

I would still check the tyres, wheels, suspension/steering linkages and the hub bearing unit for looseness. If the R&P unit was shot, it usually exhibits signs of fluid leak or torn boots. How are the colour & level of the fluid? Draining & refilling is a cheap alternative to see if it cures.

Any ABS/TRAC-related indications? Warped rotors or malfunctioning ABS/TRAC may also cause shuddering but I am not sure how frequently it occurs on Volvos. Do you hear clicking noise as you turn?

As a starter, you can also check the tyre pressure or check for uneven tread wear. Also check for loose hub nut or lug bolts. Ugh, running out of ideas here. People help us!
