Smile Missing driveshaft

I just purchased a 1998 V70 AWD 2.4 liter wagon with 170,000 miles on it.Its in pretty good shape, aside from some minor issues(both spring seats broken, rear stay broken, right & left control arms worn out, right front brake hose has large crack in it,a bad power steering pump)...however the previous owner had the drive shaft taken out,so no AWD for me.So why would they take it out and not put it back in ? Too expensive ? Hard to find?...I would love to put it back on.Anyone know how much time, money, headache,it would take to accomplish this.

They won't service it, so it's cheaper when the joints or bearing go bad to remove it. shop around, it's about $1000 but maybe can be found cheaper.

Extremely easy install, so the headache level is very low. however, I suppose there is a chance you'll install it and find that the AWD wasn't actually working.

Usually the reason someone removes the driveshaft is because the bevel gear (ie the transfer case) is shot and its cheaper to remove the drive shaft than to repair the transmission. YOU can probably find a used one (car-parts.com is a good resource for finding recycle yards near you) but keep in mind if you put a shaft back in, you may just find your transmission also needs work/replacement.
