Default My brother says not to buy a volvo newer than '99. Justified?

I know 2000 was the year Ford bought the brand, but is it justified to go for a 98-99 volvo instead of a 2000-2003 one? Do the newer ones reach those high miles that the older ones do... or do they at least show the promise of making it?

I posted specifically what I've been looking at in the c70 forum, but this is more of a general Volvo question.

Thanks.

1999 MY is when they went to ETM (electronic throttle module), i.e. drive by wire.

That's why I stick to '98 or older. Seems like the '99 and 2000 MY had the most ETM issues from what I've heard...

Default Considerations

Hello, Ford owned since April 1999. Sold when, December? January? The subject of "Radioactive Volvos" is a hard one to search. Regarding the bad ETMs: a)Avoid 1999 to 2002. b)you have options in fixing a broken ETM. Avoid AW 5-speed transmissions until 2003. There's plenty posted about how to proceed with ownership of an early AW 5 speed as well as first generation AWD systems. Records of maintenance are highly desirable. Finding a good older 850 or V70 is work. If you don't do a large amount of your car maintenance yourself or through a good independant mechanic, you'll see little, if any, value to most older cars. Turbo condition, bad door liners, cracked leather, leaks-neglect, inoperative A/C, worn suspension, broken accessories and electrical problems come with all cars and have come up as topics on Volvo V70 boards. You must budget an old car. Are you looking at C70s or V70s? Kira

Sure, I agree as a DIYer. Too many VIN/Car specific parts and electrical/tranny gremlins for me.

I'm sure the traditionalists are going to say that only the older cars are the "true" Volvos. I've only had my S60 for 5 months, but I absolutely love it. No problems yet, and hopefully I won't have any for a while.
