Exclamation New Engine or Feed it Oil

Hi all-

I bought a 2015 Volvo V60 in May (93k at purchase). I've had no issues with it, until, after it's first oil change, it burned through the oil after one month (though, by calculations of travel I did, 4-5k added miles in that time).

I have a Vehicle Service Contract on the car and the shop I'm working with is adamant on replacing the engine. I have concerns about this, however, due to the time and inconvenience of getting the engine replaced, likely follow-up adjustment issues, etc. I'm almost inclined at this point just to recognize that burning oil is the price to pay for owning a used Volvo, but wanted to reach out for your experiences. Have people been able to sustain their cars with frequent oil changes and just being vigilant, or would I be setting the car up for a more cataclysmic failure?

burning one quart in 4-5K miles is within normal tolerances. as to sustaining a car - if the rings are bad now, no mystery oil is going to help (particularly on a modern engine that's been fed synthetic since day one). You can do some additional reading on blogs like bobistheoilguy.com, but if you've been maintaining the car to the factory schedule using the correct oil (both weight and spec) you are already sustaining the engine. Out of curiousity, what does the oil look like/smell like after 5k miles?
