Auto parts store filter is ok, just try to avoid the $3 one. BTW Fram is one of the worst for quality, it's all cardboard inside if you cut one apart.

I logged close to 300k on an S70, Volvo filters all the way. Engine still tight, no appreciable oil use.
Many cars today get good engine life without using filters like the volvo's. But, I know what I'm getting when I use the OEM filters, the cost is not prohibitive, and I figure, "Why not?"
Buy 4 or 6 at a time, that last you a few years.

BTW, the problem with parts store filters is constancy. hoonk is correct, Fram filters are absolute junk. Problem is, I remember when they were considered excellent filters, in the 70's/80's I would use nothing else. So the good brand x you buy now my be butt wipe material next year. The Volvo will still be good.

You can easily find Mann filters (OEM) in bulk. Check out EEuroparts, FCP, IPD etc. The check valve was found on the older model can filters like those on an 850. My 2000 S40 uses the inserts but I still buy in bulk. Also you can buy the drain plug washers while you are shopping.
