Scrap it or list it? 850 turbo
Hey, so I have a 1996 850 turbo that I am fed up with. I’ve replaced a lot on it, and even replaced things more than once trying to get it to run like I know it can. Main issue is it loses power while driving out of nowhere. I’ve replaced a lot of the electrical, relays, sensors, and pumps. I was at a point where I needed a reliable family car, so I had to park it and give up. I’m not sure if it’s worth listing it which is like to do (hate to see an icon get scrapped) or cut my losses and clear the driveway. It has 270,000 on it. The body has no rust, the engine needs work. Turbo work. Is it worth anything anymore? That said what kind of worth would it have if any? Thanks
Curious, where are you located? I had the exact same decision a few years ago with my daughter's 850T (we owned since new, 270K miles). Engine needed a PCV system including cleaning out the bottom end, was leaking oil from the seals as a result, developed boost issues (not sure if it was the turbo or a controller etc) and she inherited a car with 70K miles from her aunt. We wound up driving it over to a local yard, got $300 cash and called it a day. I kinda wish I still had it as a project car but that's just wishful thinking that I'd have the time. You can always try posting as a project car on Bring-a-Trailer to see if somebody is interested but the market value if you sell is probably $300, maybe $500 tops.
People vary a ton here. When I first got into 850's, I bought about 7 of them for $500 each. I would routinely see them listed here for $3500 and more (each) which was what I paid for 7 of them. So I would say list it here first for $500. 270k is a lot, but turbo cylinder heads that aren't warped are really pretty hard to find. You'll note another recent thread here by a 19 year old who cusses a lot that he was considering buying an engine for $1800. Not sure if it was junkyard or something better, but seriously, $1800.
And that's not really out of line, I would say. A T5 cylinder head alone has got to be worth $500.
