Buying a 850
hi all!!
First of all thank you for reading this post.
I´m about to buy a 850 from my friend. The car is 850 1996 GLT Non turbo and its gona cost me only 1000 dollars. the car runs perfect but i want more power on it. My question is...if i can put a turbo on the engine? or its better to buy a used turbo engine and put that on the car?
Thank all
Luis

RE: Buying a 850
I agree with Redturbo, but I don't think you are going to find a Turbo 850 for $1,000. Trying to put a turbo on an NA model can be done but it will probably cost you more than it's worth. My advice would be to buy the one you can get for $1,000, drive it for a while and fix it up to be worth the most you can get out of it. Then look for a turbo model and sell the one you're buying now when you find the one you want. Make sure your friend would be OK with you selling it for more than you paid for it though. An 850 in even decent shape is worth way more than $1,000. I sold one with a blown engine for $800. I would not pass up an 850 in decent shape for $1,000, but then I would be selling it to buy a turbo if more power is what you want.

^Sounds great. And good thing you got the mechanic to check the car!
When you think about turboing the n/a, you need to remember... It's not like the original car is in pristine shape either. You'd be paying for the swap/turbo kit ($2000 as a very very conservative estimate, and assuming you do everything yourself), and you'd probably have at least $1000-1500 in maintenance work.

RE: Buying a 850
I'm glad your not buying that NA if you really want a turbo.
NA to Turbo conversions can be done and have been done. However they take a lot of time and money. Just a short list of item you would have needed if you went with the NA and decided to turbo it.
1. Intercooler
2. Turbo
3. Intercooler hardpipes
4. Turbo hoses
5. Vaccum lines
6. Downpipe
7. Catback exhaust system
8. Bigger injectors
9. ECU tuning (Tuning would be the biggest thing. You just can't slap a turbo on the car and go. You need proper and good ECU tuning to get the turbo setup working right in this instance.)
$2500-$5000 is a good estimate because it will take time and money and dyno tuning.
That is just a short list of what you would need to do a NA to turbo swap. Unless you dropped a turbo 850 engine into your engine bay.
