Think I'll stop using bank drive through - my poor rim
Ok today was number two crunch in the past year.
When pulling my V60 up to that little machine that vacuums my deposit to the inside to the bank I find that not all machines / curbs are engineered the same. Today I couldn't reach the machine, got closer, still couldn't reach the machine, so I pulled closer and then I heard it, that gnawing sound of my rim against the curb. Even at the point that my rim was now against the curb, I still had to wrestle with reaching the machine. I'm about 5'11" and what I am guessing is they have engineered those things for bigger SUV's types of cars.
There was another time that I was in the parking spot to pick up some groceries (it is a pull through in the middle of the lot separated from other parking by curbs). It is the kind where you order online, when you arrive at the store you call into the store and they bring out your groceries. I get my groceries and pull straight ahead and crunch. WTH!?!??! Well when they made the curb, they made a split curb and the curb located where you go to pull out was 6 inches out of alignment with the curb you were sitting at when you pulled into the space. It was so far off that I could see a bigger vehicle running up onto the front of he curb itself. The store employee was still there and I pointed it out to her. Her response was, I never noticed but yes, your right that isn't right.
Is it the V60 and low profile tires that allow the rims to hit? I looked at our Honda CRV that I've driven a lot, it doesn't have low profile tires and there isn't a mark on the rims? I don't remember having this issue with our V50 and S60 but neither had low profile tires.
Also I notice the profile of the sidewalls on the CRV and V60 are different. The tire sidewall on the CRV has a radius that comes out over the rim more than the V60. The tire sidewall on the V60 is almost darn near parrell with the rim. Which makes the rim more vulnerable to getting nicked.
My fine tooth file smoothed everything but it will eventually need some paint on those aluminum rims. I just won't go back to that bank and will use my normal bank.
Like many cities, our roads are filled with potholes and we have a lot of major road construction. Ha! At 2:25 in the video you'll see some nicks in the rim and a tire nick. If I hadn't just spent a lot of $$$ on brand new tires, I'd probably use the calculation to go to a regular tire. I'm not really a fan of low profile. They look really nice but at 67 years old I care more about taking bumps over taking fast corners.
