RE: traction control vs. awd
because we are looking at a newer volvo and need one that can get around good in the snow and i dont kno if we should get an awd. We want aan older one like 1998 1999 or something and dont know how well they wouuld get around. We would be selling a 4x4 to get this and want one that gets around good. My 850 have wiring for traction control so i ordered a switch cant wait to see wut it does.

RE: traction control vs. awd
AWD is Great.
I live in northern Wisconsin, and the snow can get pretty bad up here too. I drive a '99 S70 with traction control, but only front wheel drive. If I could change one thing about my car I would make it all wheel drive (other than possibly a +200 horsepower boost ) My mom drives a XC-70 w/ all wheel drive (I think it also has some 'package' that includes a slightly raised suspension) and I have never managed to get her car stuck. I have gotten my car stuck in deep snow on my driveway a couple of times (2x from sliding part-way into a snowbank, and once because of about 6 inches of fresh snow). On the occasion where my S70 got stuck in the deep snow, my sister and I actually backed my mom's car down our rather long driveway and used it to tow the S70 back to our house (even though my parents had their doubts )!
The traction control will help to alert you as to when your tires are spinning out from too much acceleration and help control it, BUT in my experience, if you get stuck, it won't do you much good. This is simply because it regulates the amount of power to the drive wheels to prevent spinning out, but if your already stuck, it still can't provide your front tires with any extra traction (this is where AWD is a +++).
Hopefully this was helpful to someone, even if I did somewhat 'reserect' this thread.

RE: traction control vs. awd
yah i wish i could get an awd volvo sedan but they are so hard to come by up in alaska and to expencive for me i could sell my car for like 5,000-6,000 but that still is not enough for an awd model. That is why i looked into audi and subaru but i really dont want to get nanything but a volvo.
