V70 or v40

Early year S series (s40, s80) and the V70. Years of 2000-2003. Transmissions have internal flaws, thus causing them go go bad prematurely. I believe the v40 has the s40 driveline, just a short wagon.
Turbos, are usually fine. Once in a blue moon I hear of one going bad, usually with higher miles the shaft gets some slop in it, as with all turbos.
Turbo engines will get much better gas mileage. Lot of hoses when you open the hood, but don't let that scare you.

If you are looking at EPA figures throw them out the window. I have customers that are getting 35 mpg+ in there s40s.
Only 2wd models will ever get more than 30 MPG. Awd adds a lot of rolling resistance. 2wd models seem to be harder to find.
all volvo engines after about 1994 share same designs per engine class. So a lot of the internals are the same, just different bores, strokes and number of cylinders, and or cylinder head design.

Looked at v40s 850s and v70s and my favorite is 98 v70xc what a beautiful car except fuel mileage! Looked at one today and left front driveshaft has loads of play where it enters trans and its leaking badly, like 3/4" of play. whatever bearing, bushing etc is in there is bad and maybe trans case also have to find a diagram of trans to check it out.

ok is that the joint moving. Are you prying on it or grabbing it with your hand. It is normal for some movement, but usually (most I have seen that it wasn't an issue) was 1/4 inch ither way.
Leaks can be hard to pinpoint. You will have to clean the entire bottom of the transmission with solvent and rags. Could be a front pump seal, output shaft seal input seal for the angle gear, rear main seal, for a leak from the tranny cooler line where it goes into the transmission. Those listed are the most common.
V70 AWD turbo models get around 28 highway in those years, thats not too bad considering how versatile they are. Non turbos get less. 2wd turbo models get more.
