Default Which Volvo model/year to buy?

My wife asked me to post this question. We currently own a 2001 Volvo S80 with 118k miles. I'm presently doing a timing belt change myself (thus the reason why i joined the forum) because it is way over due and I don't have the money to have it done (presently laid off). I do the normal maintenance myself and So far we've been very lucky and therefore very happy thusfar...no serious car problems. After reading many posts it appears the S80's have many issues and want to avoid the high mileage cost of maintenance. When I get back to work ( hopefully soon) my wife wants us to trade it in for a newer used model.....S80 or S60. Does anyone have any suggestions in terms of reliability.

Here's my personal opinion; I would go with the latest model year's turbocharged S60. The lower the mileage, the better (in general). Avoid any first-year production.

I would, however, get '95 850 T5-R or '97 850R and restore it as I have most of the equipment/tools/skills.....

......that is, only if I can come back to the States. I'm currently stuck in Japan and cannot even afford a tricycle. My equipment & tools are resting in peace at my friend's garage in Vermont.

True, if you really want a Volvo that's going to last you forever and not have to worry about costly repairs, buy a 94-97 850 or a 98 S70.

IMO, 97 850 or 98 S70, though some of the S60's that are taken care of also are good!

+1. You could get a newer S60 and if they're properly maintained will last just as long, you'll just have more up front costs.

I currently have a 2000 S70 GLT/SE 170k. I got it a year and a half ago. I need some more space since i am on the move. Thinking of getting a V70 or XC70. Which model is the best bang for the buck. I like the new body style of the 2001's and later, but the mods for the 98-00 are sweet. Which would be easier to work on and get parts for?

If you don't need the larger S80 get a S60 loaded (including turbo). I use to look at turbo's as being high maintenance but a turbo is really a safety feature.
