Just get a K&N Drop in filter for the airbox. If you want, you can open up the stock air-inlet, but a CAI really isn't worth the investment. Hell, I don't even know if a decent one is available.

For starters any research would have shown that none exist for this 70 series model 1998-2000.

What does exist is a Short Ram Intake (SRI), which replaces the stock airbox but still uses the fresh air tube to get air to the filter.

I have one, it works. Makes great sound but the performance gain is nothing really. It isn't worth the money.

I agree just put a performance panel filter in and be on your way.

yeah, ive had the ram intake, very noist , no gain in performance. probably loss actually due to hot air. i now have a K&N drop in. no noise, but i definitely feel better about its performance.

install this Performance Fresh Air Pipe 98 S/V/C70

pop out the stock air box and throw on a cone filter, or drop in a better square style filter in the stock airbox and still reap a lot of benifits. the stock airbox keeps things quiet aswell.

That K&N "cold air kit" is a joke for the money. It's just cheezy flexible plastic tubing and there's no cold air as you're pulling it from under the hood. No inclosure to duct to get outside air.
You could do better with PCV and duct tape or just a K&N flat panel in the stock air box as it pulls cool air from the front of the car with it's stock snorkel.

Yet another year has gone by, is there now a nice CAI with a snorkel to get cold air. The stock snorkel is like half an inch wide, WTH is that good for?

The stock system with it's little black snorkel is actually a really well designed system and pulls fresh, cool air from the front of the car.
Still don't know of a prefabricated kit for an 850. You'd need to DIY something and build an enclosure to duct out the wheel well or to the front to bring in cool air as good as the OEM box.

You can always just cut a hole in the hood and stick an air filter out of it like I did on my Madza
