Default 1998 Volvo S70 CEL P0733

1998 Volvo S70 GLT with around 134,000 miles.

Earlier this year, following FCP Euro and Robert DIY I changed the timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, the breather system, flushed the transmission fluid and completed a basic tune-up including spark plugs & wires, distributor cap and rotor.

About six months ago a check engine light (P0755 Shift Solenoid B Malfunction) came on and the vehicle would go into “limp mode” while driving.

I took the car to a local transmission service station and they replaced shift solenoid 2 but weren’t able to find or replace S1. This cleared out the P0755 CEL but shortly after the car came back another check engine light (P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio) comes on and the car goes into “limp mode” just as before.

This “limp mode” is intermittent and when I took it back to the service station they were unable to duplicate the problem and suggested that if it wasn't continuous the problem was likely “outside” the transmission and not something they had experience with.

I have not been able to find anything that sounds exactly like what I’m experiencing but thought it might be related to the PNP switch so I ordered one from FCP Euro and was planning to change that. I think I can do that, it seems pretty straight forward but I just don’t know if that is going to solve this problem. I wonder if I may have caused this by bumping a wire loose when I was working on the engine earlier this year.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

The "incorrect ratio" codes can be caused by slipping clutches (in this case gear 3) The tcm knows the engine speed, car speed, what gear it's in - if those ratios don't match because a clutch is slipping - you get ---------- Incorrect ratio.

Sorry
