This is a popular debate topic. Volvo doesn't have a fluid change interval on most automatic transmissions but most dealers offer or recommend periodic servicing of the transmission. There's two main camps here - those who cite 50,000 miles and others cite 100,000 as the interval. Next is there's two approaches to changing the fluid. You can do a drain-fill - which will only replace about 60% of the fluid, but this can be done at home with minimal tools. If you do 3 cycles ie drain/fill, run the car to circulate, repeating 3 times you'd go through about a 12 quart case of fluid and have 90% fresh. The other option is a flush which involves pumping out/pumping in the fluid while the car is running to have the fluid circulated. The one thing to know if you are considering a DIY is that the newer transmissions such as the six speed Aisins don't use a dip stick to set the fluid level - they use a drain tube that is opened when the transmission reaches the proper operating temperature (ie 55C) which requires a scan tool like VIDA DICE to report back the transmission temperature. Also, its crucial to use the correct fluid type for your year/transmission model. Different Volvo models use different fluid types so you need to use what's right for your car.

So my suggestion is since your car is 10 years old, and if you've never had the trans fluid replaced, go for it and not worry about redoing for another 5 years or so. It will probably cost about $300 or so at a dealer, less at an indy. Personally I am in the 100K miles camp for my Volvos which don't show a service interval, but my VW CC with the DSG recommends a service every 40K so I'd also suggest you consult your owners manual for any model specific maintenance intervals.
