Another proud Volvo owner('86)
Howdy,
New Volvo owner here from Texas. Owned 14 cars, but this is my first European, and only my second foreign car. I bought my 1986 240GL a few weeks ago. Not really a tech question, so i'll ask it now. Where I work(Autozone), on online forms, and other such references, I have to refer to my station wagon as a 245GL. From my reading though, the last digit(5) stopped denoting the doors the vehicle had several years before mine was produced. I believe the title refers to my car as a 240. My tailgate says 240GL. So, do I refer to my car as a 240GL, or a 245GL?
I bought my 245/240 from the original owners. They were Volvo enthusiasts. The car had been taken to the same Volvo dealership (in Fort Worth) all it's life. I even have dealer service records for all the scheduled maintenance. And after they had surpassed all the scheduled maintenance, they still had the timing replaced after 50,000, trans fluid changed regurally, etc etc. Even had the undercoat inspected anually. The car now has 272,000 and is still running strong as ever. I notice some excess lifter noise when it's cold, but that's trivial.
I must say, I am impressed with my Volvo's engineering and with it's reliability. Most parts are original. Alternator, compressor, etc etc. I trust I'll get many years of reliable service, with regular maintenance, a careful foot, and my trusty tool set.
