Hello to all, I recently purchased a 1988 240DL sedan. My wife and I bought a new one after we got married in 1981. I saw this car for sale on an auction website and although it was a 1988, it was the same white with blue cloth interior as our original one. It has 92K miles on it, well cared for and in excellent condition for its age with no rust at all. Coming from California may have helped! The few times I've driven it so far bring back a lot of pleasant memories. Overall I'm finding it to be a very easy car to work on. I've replaced the tail lights, put all new correct fuses in the panel, added new door pockets, replaced the rear grilles, rear package tray carpet, seat belt covers and a few other minor items. I need to replace the washer pump and see why the back up tail lights aren't working. I think it has something to do with the new circuit board that came with the tail lights. I've read a few complaints on how they don't work and people hard wire them instead. Will need to think about that as well as they will be needed to pass safety inspection. The old lights worked fine but were a little chipped and faded. I ordered new tail lights from Swedish Auto Lamps and a new washer pump and nozzles from IPD, another reminder from the 80's! I also have a popping noise when I open the front passenger door. Looks like its from the spring when it hits the two rollers. Not sure if the hinge needs to be replaced or maybe just the spring? And I need to clear up the head light lens as they are both dull, still researching best method for that. Will need some guidance on these items. Looking forward to checking out the new forum.
That is indeed a lovely, well cared for car. You should be quite happy with it. Try some spray lithium grease on the door hinge and on the spring itself after cleaning it up a bit. The headlamps? Sometimes they will leak and moisture/dirt will accumulate inside the lenses and cover the reflective "silvering" . I have used a long handled brush device through the bulb opening to try to clean the inside with fair results. The 1988 was a good model year, the last of the LH 2.2 FI systems and the end of the biodegradable wiring for the engine harnesses. Have fun!
