Default The diagnostics

Hi, I need some advice. My son recently bought a 2001 Volvo S60. He needed to disconnect the battery, but he left the keys in the ignition. Since then, he hasn’t been able to start the car. Even the authorized service center says they don’t know what to do about it and have suggested replacing the entire control unit. The diagnostics indicate that it’s an immobilizer error. Has anyone had a similar problem? My son doesn’t want to replace the control unit; apparently, you can’t even buy one for a 2001 model anymore. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
