First Volvo - 2009 S40
Just purchased our first Volvo, a 2009 S40 T5 AWD. So far so good...
We test drove a CPO BMW 328xi and a new Infiniti G37 before deciding on the S40...both of those cars had advantages (the BMW in overall driving dynamics, the G37 in power and sheer number of features), but the S40 was a better deal and we liked the exterior and interior styling more than the other two cars. Plus, the S40 is a fun car to drive and it feels pretty solid.
What is everyone's real-world repair experience, and is there any advice on making this car last? I do admit I'm a little nervous about reliability...we usually buy cars new and keep them for a longer time. While the Japanese cars I have owned haven't been trouble-free, they have been pretty solid through over 150K miles, and it seems that newer Volvos have a reputation for not being as reliable.

That's the plan...the new cars come with 60K miles maintenance, but I'm going to also get in for oil changes in between the scheduled 7500 mile intervals. It will give my local independent mechanic a chance to also check the car out.

Welcome
Welcome to the club.
TLC is the best advice I can give you to keep your Volvo in good condition, as already mentioned by other gentlemen.
Be sure to follow scheduled maintenance; I do mine a bit more frequently than is recommended.
NEVER neglect on timing belt replacement at every 70,000 miles/5 years. Have it done at either a shop specialising in Euro makes or at the dealer.
I hope you enjoy your ride,
JPN
