funky alternator?
2011 S80 has gone through 5 batteries in 7 years... two were replaced under warranty, now three more (last one a week ago) by my local shop under battery warranty. On trip last week, alternator failed and refused to charge battery... out of town dealer wanted to replace. Instead, drove home next day without any warning light or malfunction. Anybody else had this issue with batteries. They fail all at once with no “low battery” warning or anything... just gone in the space of a few hours.

A malfunctioning alternator clutch pulley can restrict the alternators ability to keep the battery 'charged up'.
The alternator warning light does not illuminate so the problem can go undetected.
I have an Ultragauge in my V40 so I was noticing that the voltage was dropping under 12v intermittently and most often at night with the lights on due to this and the alternator and pulley unit required replacing.
Now the voltage is about 14.2v with the lights on or even up to 14.5v when first started.
My current battery is now over 4 years old and passes a load test without issue.
