Default Hello

I am a noob, both to here and to Volvo's. I just purchased(today) a 1997 850 GLT and am here to learn and be of any help I can. I have never owned a Volvo before, but have heard a lot of good things about them. Hopefully I will be one of the people saying that in the future
Here is a shot of mine before I bought it.
Larry

Hello Larry,

Greetings from Vermont.

One nice looking wagon you have. Volvos are solid cars with their reputation of being the safest passenger cars on earth (only next to VIP cars). There are some problems to Volvos, as with any cars, but most are common and once treated, they go a long way (except for certain electronic components, such as ABS module, etc...).

I hope you have a good time with your wagon, as well as with the forum.

Good day!

Thanx, I want to eventually change the wheels and do a few other things, but for now I think I will just drive it.
Where is a good place to get a service manual? I don't mean like Chilton's and such. I want a good one like a factory service manual.

Hello Larry,

Yes, the factory manuals are the best, and the only places I know of are:

1. Dealer
2. Volvo On-line publication shop
3. eBay

I myself never use eBay, so I am not sure how to use the service.

I have been using Haynes' manual, and it is good only for about 50% of the time. Haynes likes to say "This task should be entrusted to a Volvo dealer" often, even for some jobs that are well within the DIYer's capability.

As for on-line shop, I have their URL but I have it in my PC (I'm currently at a friend's place). I can list it for you in a little while. I believe they are divided into several categories (engine, electrical, cabin, etc...) and they're not cheap but you can't get better manual than the factory version.

Cheers,

JPN
