Hello from Down Under...
Hi all
I’m new here and new to Volvo (but not to forums in general). I just recently bought my very first Volvo last month. She’s a 1999 V70 2.5 20V in Silver.
I don't know much about her yet, but I've been busily searching the net. So hopefully, I'm going to be more active on her and on this forum.
Initially all I wanted was a wagon that I can easily load and unload my sailing kayak and my mountain bikes. The low roof line and the full length roof rails made it perfect for my needs, in particular the almost vertical tailgate. And since this car wasn't going to be my daily drive, I was looking for a car that was different. Something that I'd normally would not buy. Something with character but still reliable. After all, it was simply going to be my pack horse.
However, while the decision to choose the V70 was initially out of practicality and suitability for my needs, its boxiness has grown on me – there’s a unique attractiveness to it. Now what I see is the potential to really spruce her up with some tasteful 18" alloys. I'm even considering painting the B & C pillars in satin black to give it that sportier look, and further down the track replace the headlight units for some aftermarket projector types (in black). I think it will really lift its street cred.
But for now, I’m just slowly giving her some TLC. While it’s only done 161,000 kms, it does not seem like the previous owner took care of her very well. I don’t think it was ever vacuumed (sooo much gunk/dust under the rear seats and spare wheel well), and some small bits and pieces to replace/fix (ie. Some door courtesy lights broken, tailgate lock issues etc).
The “Check Engine light” is also on. So it might need some O2 sensors replaced. I’m still waiting for my OBDII scanner to arrive. Once it does, I can do a scan and know for sure. Otherwise, it seems to run well. No leaks of any kind and does not blow smoke. It idles smoothly, but for a 125kw engine, to me it seems down on power. Hopefully I should know more when I do my OBD scan.
And finally, she’s picked up a name too (how sad huh). Her license plate is BR44NY. So she’s been nick-named “Brainy”.
Here's a photo when I got her. A very ordinary run of the mill V70. I hope to spruce her up slowly

Can anyone also tell me by looking at the photo which engine this is? Is it the 2.5 w/106kw or 2.5 w/125kw? The badge on the tailgate seems to indicate I have the 2.5 20V (w/125kw). I've also read the engine is technically a 2.4 only (2435cc), but Volvo badged it a 2.5.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I believe you should be able to tell by the sticker on the timing belt cover on the front if the motor. You'll see something like B5254 or something like that. You can go to Volvo's website to decode that stuff.
