a hello to Volvo people everywhere from minnesota/ '95 960 + 850 ?'s
Hi there,
Just acquired a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT with a manual transmission to compliment my Fiancee's beautiful 1995 960 auto. Traded up from a Geo Metro and even managed to make $250 on the deal!
In any case, although I am of course quite pleased with almost all aspects of my new driving experience, all is not without trouble in Volvoland: I'm not sure when the timing belt was done so may be living on borrowed time (indy volvo mechanic assures me it was done at some point and looks fine [131k miles on the odometer]). Also there is a very slow oil leak somewhere towards the center of the engine (perhaps just slightly to the left). After changing the whole serpentine assembly and bypassing the AC the car is whisper quiet -- except for the squeaky dash (can I just squirt some of that auto foam stuff they sell at Target somewhere for this?)
Other than that the aforementioned, the car is a joy to drive and I am very happy with my choice of going with Volvo over Saab (used to have a 1987 9000 that I remember very fondly, considered a comparable new generation 9000 or old gen 9-5). The suspension is surprisingly tight on the 850 and even though both our cars are naturally aspirated I find both my I5 and my fiancee's I6 to be quite adequate despite the (very comforting, in my neighborhood of absolutely crazy drivers) extra weight of a Volvo. And no turbo maintenance to worry about, especially considering my daily commute is all of about 2.5 miles total.
So, hi Volvo community, I'm one of you now..
