Default Hi, new 850R owner from OZ

Hi everybody.
My name is Jason, i'm from Melbourne, Australia.
And, have been fortunate enough to become the new owner of a black on black 1996 Manual, 850R sedan.

This has been a relatively long time coming for me, and whilst it's not my first euro car (previous euro was a 1988 BMW 535iS manual[M5 without the twincam]) it's one i've wanted for a little while now...

I'm actually primarily a Nissan man, and just recently sold two of my Nissan's to facilitate the purchase of this 850R (a 1988 Nissan Skyline sedan, and a 1990 Nissan Pulsar SSS drag car...) but, in keeping with my Nissan heritage, i'm keeping my other 4 Nissan's

i guess now would be a good time for some photos i guess...
well, first off, my car i've had the longest (first car)
is an Australian only limited edition SVD Pulsar number 115

next is my second car, a 1990 Nissan Pulsar SSS, was my daily driver (i've turned it into to much of a track orientated car) and will soon be getting the drag cars motor to go with my track setup suspension...

next is arguably my biggest project car...a 1984 Nissan Bluebird (think you guys got them as Maxima's?) TRX, when finished it will be sporting a 2.4ltr stroked and bored L20B running twin webber's and roughly 14.5:1 compression

next (getting repetitive this word isn't it...) the first of my Skylines, a 1988 Skyline Ti (luxo barge spec) with turbo conversion and a host of other go fast goodies, good for a 13second qtr mile on street tyres and fully loaded, so around the 1500kg mark...

followed by (haha something new!) my old BMW 535iS (lovely car, **** clutch/slave/master/whatever it was) shame the clutch was never good in it, no matter what i replaced, went so far as to replace everything but the clutch and master cylinder, so it made me hate it, sell it, and then wait till i found something else...

all the while during this time, i built this, another 1990 Nissan Pulsar SSS with a fully forged CA18DET, spool rods, Tomei cams, HKS pistons, custom turbo, manifold, custom intake, custom cooler piping, EMS ECU, and a host of other parts...running on E85 made almost 300 Front wheel KW's...
and was good for a low 12 second qtr on street tyres and massive traction issues... will go good in the silver car

umm...where to next, oh, that's right...the Black Skyline...
whilst i was thinking of what next to buy, i had decided i wanted an 850R manual, and said, i wasn't buying anything else till i found a good 850R manual, but, that didn't work very well...
and i bought this, another Nissan R31 Skyline

It was seriously cheap, and i bought it to part out, made over 2k parting it out, and kept the wheels and tyres which people have offered over $1500 for because of their rarity in australia, and a pretty damn good stereo, and some other small bits...so, yay!

Now, i guess if you've stayed and read this long...time to get to the Volvo

as already stated, it's a 1996 850R manual in black.

far from perfect, but, the price was right, needs a respray on the bonnet, roof, boot, and spoiler...but, what can you do...

it's done 225,000 km's (or 139,000 miles...)

all factory, with receipts dating back to purchase, and basically one owner from new
drivers seat needs some love

but the rears look pretty new to me...

now my confession...being in a different state and accross a bit of water (im in victoria, car is in tasmania...)
i haven't looked at it myself, and haven't driven it...so, when i pick it up in a weeks time, it'll be a very interesting drive...

soo...any questions, comments, queries?

Cheers, Jason.

Hi Jason, welcome to VolvoForums.com.

Nice intro and again, welcome. At 225,000 km, the car is due it's second timing belt. They are due every 112,500, so, if it has never been done, you may want to have it changed before you drive it anywhere. If it has been done once, you are probably ok to drive it, I just would not be agressive with it because it has an interferance engine, and if the timing belt breaks, it will damage the head (valves, bent and broken) and maybe even the pistons. Also in the path of the timing belt is the water pump, belt tensioner, tensioner roller and idler roller. If either of those rollers are bad they will usually squeal when the car starts up (while cold) and if they fail during your trip home, it will toss the belt and yada, yada, yada. So, my suggestion is, DO NOT put your foot in it as bad as you'd want to if the belt has not been change within the past 120,000 km. I have purchased 2 850 R's and drove both of them home, over 1,900 kms. One have an overdue belt the other was due in 16,000 km so I wasn't worried about the later.

One thing that is OFTEN neglected is the PCV system. Not sure why, most people simply do not keep the system serviced, it's one of those "I'll wait till it blows a seal" items that will BLOW A SEAL. So, when you pick up the car, drive it a few miles, stop somewhere safe (maybe when you go get gas for the first time), leave the car running, pull the engine dip stick about 1/2 way out, and see if you see smoke coming from the dip stick tube. If you do, the system is likely clogged and it will be building pressure in the crank. Yes this is another reason NOT TO PUT YOUR FOOT IN IT. I actually blew 2 cam seals clean out of the motor putting my foot in our S70 GLT one night.

Check the tranny fluid, change the oil, gas and go. I really enjoy mine. It's hard not see what she'll do but do resist the urge.

Other than that, do you guys have lots of road where there really is NO SPEED LIMIT?

Robert

no, all our roads are speed limited
first thing i'm doing before any hard work on the motor is all the service items, the timing belt was last done at 150k or so, so it should be pretty safe this one.
my skylines are the same design, belt lets go, and head goes SMASH!
i'm really looking forward to my drive home in it...just wish this week would go faster
