Sorry to hear about the idle problem.
As to the idle speed & ignition timing, I believe 940, like almost all modern cars, are controlled electronically; means you cannot adjust them.
Is the Check Engine Light on? If not, the problem may be as simple as the car's needing basic tune-up.
Also, please note that I'm an 850 driver and am not knowledgeable on 940s. So, post this question in the 940 forum; there must be quite a few experts there who can help you better than I possibly could.
