hi users,

new potential owner here- i noticed the price of volvos depreciate a lot and was wondering if that is indicative of any mechanical issues or reliability issues that come up frequently with this vehicle.
Find it absolutely stunning, safe and would love to buy- only other issue I have is the non familiarity of most mechanics with volvos- any advice on what to look for- what mileage is acceptable- year etc would be great. currently looking at perhaps a 2015 premier at 15-35k mileage for around 15-20k.

a 2015 is too new to get any appreciable data for reliability but you can certainly look to buy some content on that online - or consider subscribing to Consumer reports. Keep in mind the stats are for recorded problems over 100,000s of cars and measured in small percentages. That doesn't say every car will have that problem, its just a way of projecting a statistical trend. I think your objective of shopping for a 3 year old car with under 35K miles is spot on. Research has shown that these cars will depreciate the least and will be highly reliable until 100,000+ miles where normal maintenance and usage repairs can be expected. I'd also base a decision on two things 1) do you really like driving the car? If its a fit for your taste, comfort, persona then I'd push reliability aside (as a 2015 is going to be more reliable than what you're driving today...) 2) what kind of service is available to you? Is a dealer near by? are there certified indy techs available who have some experience with Volvo and other Euro brands? Keep in mind, reading this forum gives you a bias - since most posters come here with problems they want to solve on their own or problems with a recent repair. So you will tend to read about the 1 bad thing, not the 10 good things people have to say. If you are really concerned about cost of repairs, you can always price an extended warranty into your purchase price.
