New 96 wagon owner!
Hi everyone!
After about a month hunting for a Volvo 850, finally found the car I've always wanted... a 96 850 Wagon in black .. with relatively low miles 92,900
When I got it, it had a couple issues:
Windshield wipers don't work (motor is weak apparently)
Rear wiper didn't work
Exhaust was shot (midpipe broke, rusted, before the muffler)
P0133 CEL (front O2 sensor?)
Needed a brake job badly (rears were dragging badly)
Tires were bald
ABS/TRACS light has a mind of its own
Apparently timing belt wasn't done at 70k
Cabin filter was the original volvo (looked more like a piece of plaster lol)
Tranny oil was dark brownish
Battery seems weak and old
On the upside:
No rust
Engine felt good, no smoking
No major electrical screwups (at least so far looks like it)
tranny shifted good
I'm a maintenance freak on all my cars, so it pissed me off to find how badly maintained this car was... so I'm doing things at a time to refresh it... So far I've done
Exhaust replacement
Drained tranny oil, replaced with 4 quarts (will replace with another 4 new quarts shortly)
New rear rotors and pads
New engine oil (Mobil 1 10-30)
Brake fluid replacement
New air filter
New spark plugs
Timing belt is coming in soon as well..
Couple questions:
- Is the P0133 related to just the front sensor? or could it be the rear (after-cat) sensor as well? I don't wanna go buying a $160 part without knowing
Great forum, TONS of useful info here.. thanks guys!

RE: New 96 wagon owner!
Hello Rev,
Greetings, lucky you've found the vehicle you've wanted.
>I'm a maintenance freak on all my cars...
Same here.
Be sure to do the timing belt & peripheral components before too late, and make sure to go with OEM parts.
>Is the P0133 related to just the front sensor? or could it be the rear (after-cat) sensor as well? I don't wanna go buying a $160 part without knowing
If your car is turbo, it has two O2 sensors, whereas NA only has one. It seems like the code is for slow response, which is chronic to 850. Try resetting the code with OBD-II scanner or at AutoZone, etc... Sometimes it take weeks for CEL to come back on due to that code.
You seem quite knowledgeable so I won't mention each item that needs servicing. Post questions/comments in the 850 forum.
Good luck,
JPN
