Could you write up some notes about converting from 'real' to synthetic oils? I've been using synthetics (admittedly, Mobile1) since 1985 on dozens of our new vehicles but I've recently inherited several 850-Turbos.I see limited history of their oil but upon inspection, they all have 'real' stuff. I am converting them over to synthetics but am not clear on 'the best method'. </P>
In the past, I've made the first switch and, about 200 miles (or two weeks), I'll do a new dump and reinstall everything, as if that first load of synth will remove 'real' sludge and better prevent a mix. </P>
Are there general rules of thumb you would recommend, and if so, would you have different recommendations based on mileage (50,000+, 75k+, 100k+, 125k+, etc.)? </P>

I tell all customers over 10k to start out with our engine flush, which is added to the old crude oil, after removing 1 qt. Then run as indicated on bottle. Drain. Then install our amsoil synthetic. And use our filters too. First because our filters have nearly 100% more capacity than others. And second, due to the check valves and filter mediums we have in place.
for anything over 10k, use the same switch method, But, run the vehicle a couple hundred miles, install another new oil filter. I do this because Amsoil will clean your engine even more in addition to the flush. Your first filter will collect more gunk. So put in a new one. And you should be good to go.
Now if you want the ultimate, install a bypass, see pic. This product filters particles smaller than a micron. Option in a sample valve. And test the oil at our recommended intervals (we use oil analyzers inc). And let science tell you when to change oil, whether you have a piston ring going out, or a bearing, etc, etc....
