New member, 1st time Volvo owner
Hi everyone,
I decided to join this forum after purchasing Josef the Black, which is what I've called my 2004 XC90 T6. This is my first Volvo so I have a lot to learn, but I already feel this forum has been helpful.
Here's the basic stats:
- 135k miles
- T6 engine, AWD
- Black leather, 7 seater
Here's what I've done so far:
- Oil change (DIY) with 7+ quarts of Castrol 5w-30 pure synthetic + wix filter
- 4 new Bridgestone Dueler tires
- New wix air filter, checked/topped off all fluids
So far Josef is running strong and not showing any signs of mechanical issues, minus some expected suspension noise from worn-out struts/strut-towers. I already know the T6 is known for being a risky buy both in terms of the tranny and also the turbos, so I was hoping to get some general advice on how to keep it running strong.
- Horror stories aside, just how long can I possibly expect from my auto tranny (original still I think)?
- Heard online I need to burn premium fuel. Is mid-grade 89 octane ok or do I need top-grade?
- Carfax shows plenty of service but no mention of timing belt replacement. Should I pre-emptively get that done?
I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this and even more so if you have some helpful advice for owning this vehicle (love it so far!).
Cheers,
Joey

Hi Joey and welcome. Congrats on the Volvo.
First and foremost check the timing belt change interval on this engine. Mine is 120k miles or 10 years. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THE TIMING BELT! Get it inspected right away. A visual inspection will tell u if there are cracks or severe wear. If so change it or risk losing your engine.
The turbo engine will run on regular but honestly the turbo runs much better on premium grade. It's worth it even for the medium grade. Its a higher compression engine and needs the higher octane.
Spare the money,,,,, you will feel the difference.
Trannies? Can't really say since my car is a t5 AWD, auto with tiptronic. So far, fingers crossed, no issues at all.
Good luck

Thanks for all the advice. My engine actually does have a belt but I've already had it replaced along with the associated pulleys, the water pump and of course new coolant. I also filled up with 91 octane recently and it seems to be running better. Hoping for a good experience with my first Volvo - so far so good.
