New Member saying Hello
Hello everybody! My name is Mike and I live in the Chicago area. I'm an Admin of one of your sister-forums, hummerforums.com.
My wife and I are looking to purchase a used 2001+ Volvo V70 wagon as our second car. Currently we own a '06 Hummer H3 5-speed which we are most-likely going to get rid of early next year. For now, the V70 would be our main car and the H3 our second until we sell it.We have been going back and forth between a Subaru Outback and the V70, but like the Volvo much more because it seems more child-friendly and has more room. We plan on having kids in the next couple of years so that's important to us.
Anyway, we are going to take a look/drive at a few of them in the next few days. One is a Cross Country and the other one is a base V70 with the 2.4 FWD drivetrain. I'm leaning more towards the FWD-only model because of mileage and easier maintanence.
If anybody knows of any specific issues I should be aware of with that year or series, please let me know. I'm going to skim the forum also and look up anything I can. I already have seen the issue with the ABS controller module (I believe that's what it is).
Anyway, thanks ahead of time. Hopefully by this weekend I'll have the car to go along with the forum membership

Welcome to the forum.
In addition to Tech's advice, check to see if your possible buy has had recall items taken care of, and if not, check them out and have them done at the dealer for free:

Scroll down on the page to see other years' V70s.
Best of luck in finding a decent V70.

RE: New Member saying Hello
Thanks guys. I purchased a 2001 V70 FWD (no Turbo). I do have the knocking noise. The strut seems fine. The wheel isn't bouncing and from the research I'm doing on the forum, it looks like it's the strut mount(s). Only makes the sound on the pass. side.
I have a quick question though; In one thread there was a reference to jacking up the car and watching for play in the strut mount. Last night was the first chance I had to do this. I jacked up the car on both sides, and as I did, the strut top lowered a bit as I jacked up the car. It wasn't moving around, but just lowered and raised a bit with the car.
This happens on both sides, but only pass. side makes the noise and you can tell something is loose. Sounds like a bad strut (I know the sound all too well).
Is it normal for the strut/mount to lower a bit when jacking up the car, or is that the sign of the bad mounts? I wasn't sure if when you guys had mentioned movement if you meant vertical movement or it moving around from side to side in the mount.
Thanks for the help! (I know this may be the wrong place to ask, but I didn't want to beat a dead horse here).
