New Member from SE New Mexico
Greetings to all,,New member here and recently purchased a 2005 XC90 that operated very well but has really thrown a shoe at my ability to figure out how to proceed. The issue started with a small engine oil leak that very quickly got so bad,,the car became unusuable,,!!! The oil leak dumps quarts per mile,!!
I removed the inner wheel panel PLUS the timing cover plastic and oil leak may be possibly coming from the front of an oil "SEAL" on the rearmost camshaft,,,???
I did not want to proceed untill I can get access to a manual that describes the correct re-assembly of the two camshaft timing mark procedure.
I have gone to Oreillys Auto, NAPA, and Autozone and they ALL tell me they have no way to order me that correct manual, SO,, I come with hopes of finding someone that can assist this old man on what is needed to make these repairs.

Private message with your Vin. Send me your email address too. I'll send you the timing procedure for your XC-90 in PDF form. YouTube should help supplement the information as well.
This procedure will require two specialty tools in order to be done properly. A Volvo Dual overhead cam locking tool [≈$55 on Amazon}, and a good seal driving tool that takes the guess work out of it.
If you buy a Gates timing belt kit, it will come with a printout of the timing belt procedure. Extensive and easy to follow.

I was not able to Possitively identify "WHERE" the oil leak was coming from, other that it was from the area of the exhaust camshaft front seal area,,,?? Again, many Thanks,,,,!!
If you pop the timing cover off (only takes one 10mm) and get in there with a bright flashlight, you should be able to ascertain where that leak is coming from exactly.
For parts, get on IPD's website https://www.ipdusa.com
Type in your vehicle information, go to the "Kit Builder" function and select one of the kits that's affordable to you. You can choose from OEM Volvo, OE aftermarket, aftermarket performance, or budget aftermarket on their website.
If you have oil leaks from your camshafts, you'll want to go ahead and replace both seals, the water pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, idler pulley, and tensioner while you're at it. Especially if history is unknown, or it hasn't been done in years.
When I get home today, I'll send over that service info.

Hey Pixeldust,,,Many THANKS your kind offer!!! I am fairly certain the leak is coming from the front seal on the exhaust cam area, I do plan to replace the seals on both camshafts, timing belt, idler, belt tensioner, and crankshaft seal if I can locate one. What was odd, is that it would not start leaking oil until after running about 5 minutes and sometimes even 10 minutes,,,? BUT,,when it did start leaking,,,it would leak a quart of oil out in just minutes, which makes me wonder if PCV valve is stucking closed and forcing engine oil out of the seal,,,?
Question for the group,,,what size is the BIG torx socket tool for removing the center bolt on both camshafts and where to purchase?
Another question for the group does anyone have the camshaft locking tool they want to sell or rent to me? I figure many others have purchased same,,,that will never br used again,,,,??? THANKS
