Just another newbie popping in to say hello. My daily driver/second car is a white '97 850 R - I am new to the Volvo world - as my #1 passion is 5.0 mustangs. Any information/advice about the Volvo is GREATLEY appreciated! I look forward to posting up and showing everyone my total ignorance to this car (so go easy on me when I ask a pretty dumb question)! hee hee

Have a great day!

Michelle:

Welcome.

Tehre are no such thing as dumb questions, only dumb answers (but you probably already knew that).

It appears that you are a "speed fan." I suppose that out on the wide open spaces of Texas driving at full speed ahead is a lot easier than in California! I love driving to Santa Fe, New Mexico and points East. Wide open roads and not a single Highway Patrol to spoil your day!

Welcome aboard. I just bought a White 97 850 R last weekend. I posted some pictures and there is also one in my signature. Any way, you can race the 5.0 Mustang against the R? I want to know which one is faster. I know my son has beat an older 5.0 with my 850 Turbo years ago. He now drives a BMW 325.

My R is a twin to yours! Of course stock the cobra and the R came with same HP.. I should be saying that the cobra will spank the volvo.. but I have learned (somewhat) to curb the mouth running until I know for sure! Honestly I have driven the cobra daily for 8 yrs and I have only got on it hard two times. (I love her, and do not wanna mistreat her)
... SO that was my thinking until I got the R.. now she's going to get some new toys and she will definately beat the R by the end of this summer.

My (older and supposed more responsible) brother borred the R a few weeks ago and he told me he raced a Fox body and won.

Here's my cobra - pics of the Volvo are on my laptop. I will get off my lazy butt and photoshop a signature/banner of my cars.

Nice car. I like that color.

I'm having brake problems on my R also. You said yours is making a loud noise. Is at slow speeds kind of like the sound of running over those rumble strips? That's what mine does, and it's very intermittent. I am going to put the shims on like Tech suggests. I will let you know if that fixes it.

I just talked to the service manager and he "swears" they replaced the shims each time along with the pads and rotors. I scheduled an appt for next week so hopefully the FOURTH time will be a charm. ($2K later) [:@]

Yeah it only makes the noise when the brakes get hot, like about after 30 mins of stop and go traffic.

Interestingly, if you purchased Volvo pads..............rears...............you will find that they were manufactured in Denmark. In addition to utilising a stainless shim, Volvo also had a plastic/fabric material "pad" glued to the backs of the pads. That was a further effort to quiet the chatter. I have found that usining Repco rear pads and coating the shims with synthetic caliper grease...........both sides and liberally, you will not get any noise. I found that using CRC Disc Brake Quiet on the front pads will make them noisless. I do not use Volvo pads.................they just do not have the quality of premium after market pads. At one time I used to use EBC Green Stuff pads but lately I changed to NAPA ceramic pads. Neither are good for a drivers school or competition but are great for street use!
